This could be the longest blog post in history...or could occupy blog posts for the remainder of the week. In the interest of keeping it somewhat brief, I've edited it down to some of the ones that have been drilled into my brain. As with the two previous topics, no particular order is involved.
1) It is possible to get stuck in a dress. It is not at all funny until after it is over. IT friends, this is one of those disaster recovery scenarios I should have planned for.
2) Always be very cautious as to whom you allow to use the store's bathroom.
3) Don't order dresses with ruffles at the bustline. They only look good on 0.0000001% of women. They will be hard to sell.
4) In a similar vein, consider sizing when ordering sleeveless dresses. What might look great in one size won't work in other sizes.
5) Speaking of sleeveless, make sure you order dresses with sleeves. Women want them. And they will make it very clear to you. Not everyone has triceps of steel.
6) Try on everything that comes into the store. That way, you know how the sizing runs and if there are any anomalies to the try on process. This can include everything from unhooking the underlying cami to warning the customer about the zipper to different ways to wear the dress. It makes a HUGE difference. (Plus, all that trying on is fun!)
7) Don't order pants that are see-through. Enough said.
8) Claritin is your friend. Especially if you keep the store's door open in the Spring and Fall pollen seasons.
9) Unless it is a fire, a flood, or a robbery, nothing you do is so important that it can't wait until the next day.
10) Don't be afraid to say "No". Everyone wants to sell you something. You don't want or need all of it. And you can do it in a way that is polite.
11) Do your best not to take the unkind remarks about you, the store, or the clothing personally. Often, the issue isn't about any of those things. Be as kind and compassionate to those people as you are to those who are kind to you.
12) Don't be afraid to "put yourself out there". One reason people shop in a boutique is because it is personal. They want to know you - who you are and what you like.
13) There is no real science to the shopping process with the exception of seasonality and weather. And the fact that women who shop at Zoe love the color blue.
14) Amtrak is the most delightful way to travel. Even though I'm working, I love my train trips!
15) Men buying gifts for their wives are so lovely. They really care and want to do just the right thing. Reassure him that if she doesn't like it, she can come in and you'll help her find something she likes. 9 times out of 10, he'll have hit a home run! It is then always fun to meet the wife later and hear her brag about what a great job her husband did on picking out the gift!
On a serious note:
16) When you own a business and devote significant time to it, you find out who your true friends are. I've really been overwhelmed with the love from my friends in the almost 2 years I've been working on Zoe. Your emails, your calls, your encouraging words at just the right times, your reading the blog, your stopping in to see me, and your flexibility to getting together with me are all a significant part of why I'm able to keep going. You truly lift me up constantly. I can only hope that I am able to give back to you the friendship levels you deserve.
17) Last (but actually first), I continue to learn to rely on God for all things. I've talked about it in other blog posts but I've never been in a situation until now (the closest would be when my father was dying) that I was so completely powerless in not only the outcome but in what happens on a day to day basis. I know God has transformed me through Zoe. He put me here for a reason and I'll be here as long as He has need for me to fulfill my purpose here. I pray each day that he will allow me to use the gifts He has given me to honor and glorify Him. And that Zoe will be successful, but His definition of success, not mine. You'd have to know me quite well to understand the transformation and deepening of my faith in the last year.

Just Call Me Publicity Girl
I've been called a lot of things in my lifetime. Some endearing, some complimentary, and some quite rude (and not for a family blog). If I add "publicity girl" to the list, I guess that is definitely one of the better ones.
Lots of interesting things happen at Zoe in any given week. And one of my continuing main areas of focus in 2012 is to make sure people know Zoe is here and what we have to offer. As I've mentioned in previous posts, I follow my designers through social media and it is always exciting to have them mentioned in a positive way in a well-read publication.
Through one of one these posts, I discovered that Chan Luu's Breast Cancer Wrap Bracelets had been mentioned in the Washington Flyer (the free magazine available at National and Dulles airports). This article led to discussions between me and author and ended up with Zoe (and my sartorial resolutions for the coming year) being featured on the website version of the Flyer for January/February. You can read the article here (and I'm open to anyone who wants to buy me that gorgeous hat!)
And an update on the Photo Shoot! The Assistant Editor of the magazine did pick up the clothing on Saturday morning. The stylist returned the items on Monday and said that the shoot went well and we should know soon which pictures will make the magazine. I'm continuing to hope that Zoe made the cut! At least two of the items she selected appeared to have been worn.
Despite the fun of my publicity girl days, sometimes you still wonder about the purpose of it all. A long time ago boss of mine once walked in my office and said "Have you added value today, Gerock?" Although I got a good laugh at the time, I've thought about that statement a lot over the years. And sometimes I do ask myself "Did I do anything of value today?" A recent blog post by an highly regarded legislative/political consultant helped me realize that we sometimes "add value" without even realizing it. Imagine my delight at finding two of my loves merged in one blog post - Zoe and the current political landscape! You can read his post here.

Why Zoe?
Jim and I had always said that if we had a daughter, we would name her Zoe Catherine. What I did not realize was that the name Zoe is Greek for "Life" or "Alive". How very appropriate for this new venture!
I have been searching for my purpose for a long time. God creates each of us with unique gifts and I have wanted to make sure that I honored Him by using mine appropriately. Somehow, a career in technology didn't really seem to fit His ultimate purpose for me.
In April 2006, Jim and I were discussing a new technology job that had been offered to me. As we talked through the pros and cons, I realized that the job did not excite me at all. Sure, it was prestigious and challenging but the thought of it left me feeling empty. Jim said "You know, you really should open a boutique to sell women's clothes. You would be so good at that!" While I immediately thought that would be fun, I came up with many reasons that it would not be a good idea. But, I didn't take the job.
I took a different technology job in October 2006 and set my mind to making it a success. When we realized that a biological child was not meant for us in the summer of 2008, my heart and mind began to focus intently on God's purpose for me. There were many ideas (none of which had anything to do with a boutique) but God quietly shut the door on each one. I began to pray for a burning bush to show me what I should do!
I was led to what has become my signature verse for this venture - Matthew 11:30 - For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. I realized that God wanted me to work but to do something that was enjoyable! And I truly feel alive when working on Zoe!
In the fall of 2009, I decided that I needed to find out if the dream of a boutique was really a possibility. I interviewed boutique owners and studied their strategies to determine if this was something I really could do! And I found that I could! Jim and I started talking about how we could make this a reality and I also started reviewing my remaining projects at work to determine the best time to make a change.
On April 1, 2010, I submitted my resignation and my final day was May 7, 2010. I am now focused on making Zoe a reality. This blog will be used to chronicle my journey and my inspirations.
