In my continued mea culpa regarding my poor blog posting, I realized that I had interviewed Tara on the topic of this blog when I was in the store following the District Sample Sale, oh....about a month ago. It is high time I got around to giving you the details around these beautiful windows!
The origin: Our lovely Alexandra is studying for the SAT and, during quiet times in the store, she and Tara review vocabulary words. (Who knew that working at Zoe was so educational?) One of the words was "defoliate" and Tara challenged Alexandra to use it in a sentence. As they discussed the word in detail, all Tara could think of was falling leaves. And an idea for a window display was born!
The two of them had also ventured to Georgetown one evening to see the movie "Scatter My Ashes At Bergdorfs" and had been wowed by the window displays and how each one told a story. Even more inspired, Tara began searching for the templates to help her carry out her vision.
She found the templates for the beautiful fall leaves online and began printing and coloring leaves in her spare time (coloring them at one of her boyfriend's football games, she was asked if she was a teacher!) For the trees (shown below) she resourcefully used cardboard from the boxes containing clothes that are delivered to Zoe. (We are all about recycling, reusing, and repurposing at Zoe!) The corrugated cardboard was perfect for creating a bark-like effect when she added a darker brown market to it.
Like Janice and Karen, she doesn't tell me exactly what she is planning but assures me that I will like it (and I always do!) If you haven't already, make sure to stop by to let her know how much you love her windows!

Summer Window Decorations
Zoe Assistant Manager Tara loves merchandising and displays. She recently embarked on a new design for Zoe's beautiful, large windows facing South Union Street. Over the weekend, she told me the story of her design.
Pinterest was the first source of inspiration - just try a search for "Window Displays" and you'll have a feast for the eyes! Intrigued by some displays created on the theme of Van Gogh's beautiful Starry Night, she went to work determining how to create a backdrop of floating, three-dimensional stars! (and follow my rule of "I don't want it to cost much!)
Her next search took her to YouTube, where she found a video "How to Make An Origami Diamond". This easy and detailed tutorial was created by a young boy! After watching it together in the store yesterday, we all agreed that you can learn to do anything on YouTube.
But what to use? Tara expertly recycled old Modern Luxury DC Magazines and InStyle Magazines to form the diamonds and then construct them into stars. She especially liked the thickness of the DC Magazine paper for ease of folding and holding shape. As a result, no two stars are alike and all are bright and colorful!
She and Alexandra hung the stars one Wednesday afternoon and the effect is beautiful! Stop by to see it in person!

Window Wonderland 2012
Remember all the fun and frenzy of last year's Old Town Alexandria Window Wonderland contest? And remember when I said that the voting/campaigning process reminded me why I got out of politics? Well, we won't focus on all that right now. But I do want to tell you more about the windows and the process for creating them.
Let me first state that I am ALWAYS the last to know what Zoe's windows are going to look like each season. This time around, both Tara and my husband, Jim, knew about the windows and were sworn to secrecy! I was outraged! (Not really)
Janice and Karen wanted this year's design to match the chic offerings at Zoe so they selected sparkly chandeliers as the foundation! They took lampshades
And created these beauties!
If you notice, the first two shades above had their covers completely removed but the ladies incorporated the cover into the design of the third shade/chandelier!
They then added snowflake and colored ball ornaments, plastic pink and clear crystals (previously used in the Valentines window), strips of tulle and some tinsel.
Rather than lighting the chandeliers themselves, they used a lighted strand of garland (found at one of the many estate sales they scour on weekends!) They added more colored balls and snowflake ornaments as well as Chinese food containers wrapped up as packages (in pink polka dot Zoe tissue paper, of course)! The floating packages were the brainchild of Tara and Alexandra's creative thinking one Sunday afternoon earlier in the Fall!
And, you guessed it...here it comes...please vote for Zoe's window display in the Old Town Boutique District Window Wonderland contest! The link for voting is:

You may vote through December 9th!
Next Up: Black Friday - Year 2
